DBP 09: Magnetic Mind
Magnetic Mind – Platformer – More Info
This stunning looking platformer seems to be inspired by LittleBigPlanet. The physics are also really impressive. This has a real chance of winning this year’s Dream Build Play and going to XBLA.
Edit: For those coming from N4G this is an Indie Game coming from a small development team. Microsoft has nothing to do with it.
Edit 2: You can now read an interview I did with Oliver Schulze, the project lead on Magnetic Mind here.
Description from the official site:
What is it?
Magnetic Mind is a game created with Microsofts’ XNA Game Studio.
The Story:
In Magnetic Mind you play a little guy, that finds itself in a real world, where everything is huge. The guy (player) doesn´t know what happened, because he lost his whole memory of the last days. The player controls the guy through this world and has to find out, what has happened to him.
Game Mechanic:
The guy is controlled by the player and can be moved 3-Dimensional in all directions (left, right, back, front). He can also Jump and Climb up walls. There are also chains/ropes, where the guy can swing. The guy has also a ring on its finger, with that he can control large Objects. It is an anti-gravitation ring that helps to lift up larger objects and to carry them evrywhere. There is also a possibility to control vehicles, like a skateboard. With all of this possibilities the guy has to find his way through the levels, that consists of many physically traps.
The Levels:
At the moment we are working on two levels: The Garden and The Kitchen. There are many other levels in plan: The Bath, The Basement, The Living Room, ….
The aim is, to make them visually as photo-realistic as possible…. and at the moment, it looks really good!Release:
We plan to release this game as a XBox-Live Community Game. The release date is still unknown, some day in 2010… But we try to get some levels finished for the Dream Build Play Competition in August, 2009
wow seems like a little big ripoff to me
Wtf, a platforming, side scrolling, physics-based game where you are a very small character to everything around you and to top it off a level called the garden…
Could they get sued?
No. Lots of games use themes and ideas from other games. I think this looks great.
This looks really good
*REMOVED*
It’s just perhaps showing that LBP is possible on 360?…
@infamous: This isn’t anything to do with Microsoft. *sigh*
impressive looking game from just 3 ppl listed in the credits. As far as the LBP comparisons how many freaking articles say games have elements similar to Halo, Mario, God of War? plenty
*REMOVED*
How close does something have to be to something else to be considered copyright infringement? Even the first area is called The Garden.
At least they have new Ideas to contribute to something that someone else started… I guess.
This just looks sad…….. Microsoft or not
I’m removing any obviously fanboyish comments. Having a negative opinion of the game is fine (see some of the posts above me) but I don’t want the comments section of this blog to turn into the cesspool that is N4G.
it’s a nice looking game, and is very impressive for an indie title, but it really does seem like a poor man’s littlebigplanet. very obvious that the developer is trying to rip off lbp, but haven’t managed to recreate the charm, fun, or even half of the features yet. it may turn out to be a good game possibly, but you’d think they wouldn’t be so obvious and blatant with the attempt at copying lbp.
looks slow and boring.
this doesn’t look as fun as littlebigplanet
LOL,i guess this is a LBP rip, but there still isnt a level creation mode.
Yes a lot of game do get inspired and use ideas from other games but this is just way to similar. The whole point of the game is the same not to mention even the design of the level(especially the floor with the bricks). Its trying to be exactly like Littlebigplanet. The only difference is the menu.
If any game developer could sue other developers for plagiarism in gameplay, look, setting, idea, and point of the game it would be Media Molecule against this games developers.
But in the long run I think Littlebigplanet will definitely not have any problems from this game. But I am sure xbox fanboys and such will start spamming this on Littlebigplanet videos trying to show off and pretend Littlebigplanet no longer is a problem to xbox 360 owners.
Littlebigplanet wins for me big time. I have it for my PS3.
I think this is just AWESOME, it is about time that us 360 owners get something remotely close to the Incredible work that Media Molecule is well known for (Little Big Planet) I myself own little big planet but I have several friends on my xbox that have never touched a ps3 due to the price alone of the system, which I understand in this economy people dont really spend as much un things, and if you can get a similiar experieance on a cheaper (not in quality) system more people flock to that, anyways back to the point I have often talked up little big planet to my friends, but unfortunatly they will not get to expierence how great of a game it is, I look forward to being able to play this wonderfull looking title known as Magnetic Mind… Love it or hate it these 3 people working on it know a good thing when they see it, and they are paying Homage to a truly great title, thanks once again and hope things go well for them in the Dream Build competition, they would have my vote for sure
this look like a cheap LBP rip-off
I guess the music in the commercial makes sense now..
You said Microsoft has nothing to do with it while just a line down you have a quote saying, “Magnetic Mind is a game created with Microsofts’ XNA Game Studio”. Note the MICROSOFT game studio part.
@bloogs XNA Game Studio allows anyone to program their own games and release them on Xbox LIVE. Microsoft are not responsible for what is made with it.
Little Big Planet FTW!
little big planet looks way better hate when games copy off of other games
Hi,
I am the main developer of Magnetic Mind, and I feel, I have to make some comments on that game:
First: this game is not from Microsoft and we are not related to them! And Magnetic Mind is not thought to be a rip-off of LBP and it is not thought to be a game, that should show, that a LBP is possible on a XBox.
We are 3 hobbyists, that just wanted to make a funny game for the XBox (made possible with the Indie-Game-Channel on XBox Live). We made this besides our normal work in the evenings. So it is just a hobby and has no commercial background. The competition Dream Build Play from Microsoft is a great way, to compete with other Indie-Game-Developers.
To the game: Magnetic Mind is a little bit inspired by Little Big Planet, that’s right. The idea grew as follows: We wanted to make a 3D – sidescrolling Jump and Run game with great graphics. Someday we saw a video of LBP and were very impressed by its style and visuals. So we used some of its elements in our game: The depth of field for example and the camera positioning. The idea, to make a guy, that finds itself in a large world, was born before we meet LBP.
But the gameplay and story itself differs very much from LBP. We tried to make an environment, that is very close to reallity as you can see in the kitchen-Level.
Conclusion: Magnetic Mind does not want to be a clone of LBP it is only inspired by it. And of course LBP is much more than Magnetic Mind, please keep in mind, that we are 3 guys, that are working on the game in the evenings and that we do this as a hobby.
We never had thought, that Magnetic Mind would start such a flame-war (this article here is not the only one where such discussions have arrised!!).
Many greetings
the developers of Magnetic Mind
People need to calm down. “Sue! Sue! Sue!” give me a break! Everyone is so trigger happy when it comes to suing! TONS of games are inspired by others, some more blatantly than others. Just calm down. You guys are at a 10 you need to be at a 2.
@Oliver Thanks for posting, I doubt it will stop the fanboys though.

@Oliver
Just remember the people hating are not the people that would ever show appreciation for an XNA game. They are angry Playstation owners.
I think the comparsion to LBP is a good way to promote your game. I wouldn’t lose any sleep over the flaming Sony fanboys.
“You said Microsoft has nothing to do with it while just a line down you have a quote saying, “Magnetic Mind is a game created with Microsofts’ XNA Game Studio”. Note the MICROSOFT game studio part.”
Bloogs. You sir, are an idiot.
XNA Game Studio is a development environment. What you said makes no sense. It would be like saying that everything coded in Microsoft Visual Studio is a Microsoft product.
It’s a DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT.
This game has nothing to do with Microsoft.

Okay, it might have been inspired by LittleBigPlanet, but think, Doom inspired what? Every other first person shooter out there! Mario Bros inspired what? Every other platformer out there! I think LittleBigPlanet is a… gaming revolution, a new genre of games, and Magnetic Mind is a part of it!
